BASIC OUTLINE OF ARTICLE AND HOW IT RELATES TO MY DESIGN

Tigg + Coll Architects has revamped the common spaces for a student housing block in London for students to do work in a comfortable and engaging environment around other students. Split up into different spaces using the flooring areas for studying, mee5ng friends or quiet areas for relaxing. Social distancing is already implicated as the designing and building stages took place during the middle of the covid-19 pandemic. The space is also separated using wooden panelled partial walls creating natural separation and creates a sense of privacy within the students while not completely being secluded from everyone. Using wooden panels to serape spaces directly relates to my most recent project design in a cafe for migrant woman creasing a safe place for them to come and learn new skills to give them a second chance and make sure they have everything they need, including connections to people and the general public, the wooden panels come into place being utilised as a way to separate the workshop area in the upstairs of the cafe from on the general public downstairs to create a sense of importance and welcoming environment for them to be encouraged in to making bright decisions for their future, the structure enables the space to cater specifically to the migrant women without completely isolating them from the rest of the cafe and allowing them to move through the space upstairs to the workshop area.

HOW IT HAS INFLUENCED MY FUTURE DESIGN WORK

This article has many elements in its design similar to mine, the materials used in this work influenced my development further using panelled wood around the room to separate spaces. I utilised this in MILK Cafe creating a space for migrant woman to learn new skills and make connections with new people, inside the cafe design there is a plywood panelled structure that separates the workshop area from the general public upstairs, to make a fresh non judgemental space where they can be themselves while gaining experience and knowledge for their future. The furniture in Common is very similar to the furniture I picked for MILK Cafe, they have marble topped tables which are also present in my design and also the use of the colour orange fabric on chairs. In future design work I want to take the flooring element from Tigg + Coll and their design for the common rooms, they use unique and eye- catching flooring to differentiate spaces throughout the space to create zones that have different purposes, this is an element I could take and use in my future projects.
